How to Care for Your Dog?

A guide for every young dog owner โ€” because your dog deserves the very best!

๐Ÿฅฃ

1. Feeding โ€” consistency is key

Your dog waits for their meal just like you wait for your favourite pizza โ€” with their whole heart! Feeding is one of the most important responsibilities of a pet owner. Dogs love routine, so try to feed them at the same times every day.

How to do it right:

  • ๐Ÿพ Find out how many times a day and how many grams of food your dog needs (ask a parent or check the food packaging).
  • ๐Ÿพ Always wash the bowl after meals โ€” just like you wouldn't want to eat from a dirty plate, neither does your dog.
  • ๐Ÿพ Remember fresh water โ€” refill it at least once a day.
  • ๐Ÿพ Don't feed your dog from your plate โ€” chocolate, onions and grapes are toxic for dogs!
๐Ÿ’ก

Always place the water bowl in the same spot. Your dog will quickly learn where to find it.

2. Walks โ€” movement is health (and happiness!)

A walk for a dog isn't just a bathroom break โ€” it's a big adventure! Sniffing, exploring the world, running โ€” all of this makes your dog happy and calm at home.

How to walk smartly:

  • ๐Ÿพ Walk your dog at least 3 times a day, depending on their breed and age.
  • ๐Ÿพ Hold the leash firmly โ€” not too loose so the dog doesn't run off, not too tight so you're not pulling them.
  • ๐Ÿพ Always clean up after your dog โ€” it's your responsibility as an owner and a matter of respect for others.
  • ๐Ÿพ Watch your dog during the walk โ€” if they're limping or something worries them, tell an adult.
๐Ÿ’ก

Bring a treat on your walk. You can practise commands along the way and reward your dog for good behaviour!

3. Brushing โ€” a beautiful coat is a healthy coat

Regular brushing is more than just looks โ€” it's caring for your dog's health. It removes dead fur, prevents matting and is a great bonding time for you both!

How to brush your dog:

  • ๐Ÿพ Check which brush is right for your dog (long-haired dogs need a different brush than short-haired ones).
  • ๐Ÿพ Brush gently, always in the direction of fur growth โ€” don't tug or pull.
  • ๐Ÿพ Brush regularly: short coats โ€” once a week, long coats โ€” even every day.
  • ๐Ÿพ Check at the same time for ticks, wounds or skin changes.
๐Ÿ’ก

Make brushing a ritual โ€” sit comfortably with your dog and talk to them calmly. Most dogs absolutely love it!

๐Ÿ›

4. Bath time โ€” squeaky clean, not muddy!

Bath time can be a challenge โ€” but only at first! Once your dog gets used to the water, it can become a nice routine. Don't bathe them too often โ€” once every 3-6 months is usually enough, unless they've really rolled in mud ๐Ÿ˜„

How to bathe your dog step by step:

  • ๐Ÿพ Prepare the shampoo, towel and everything you need before you start โ€” so you don't have to leave mid-bath.
  • ๐Ÿพ Only use shampoo made for dogs โ€” human products can irritate their skin.
  • ๐Ÿพ The water should be lukewarm โ€” not too cold, not too hot.
  • ๐Ÿพ Avoid getting water in the ears and eyes โ€” wash the head very carefully.
  • ๐Ÿพ After the bath, dry your dog well โ€” first with a towel, then with a hair dryer on warm (not hot!) air.
๐Ÿ’ก

Reward your dog during bath time with treats and a calm voice. They'll soon learn that bath = something good!

๐ŸŽพ

5. Playtime โ€” because every dog needs joy!

Play isn't just fun โ€” it's a need! Dogs that don't play get bored and may start destroying things at home. Time spent playing together is the best gift you can give your dog.

Play ideas:

  • ๐Ÿพ Throwing a ball or stick โ€” a classic that never gets old.
  • ๐Ÿพ Tug of war โ€” dogs love it, and you'll get some exercise too!
  • ๐Ÿพ Hide treats โ€” hide a snack in different spots and let your dog find it. It exercises their nose and brain!
  • ๐Ÿพ An obstacle course from cushions and chairs โ€” creative indoor fun.
๐Ÿ’ก

Your dog doesn't understand "I'm busy". Even 15 minutes of active play a day makes a huge difference!

๐Ÿฆท

6. Brushing teeth โ€” yes, dogs need this too!

This is one task many owners forget โ€” which is a shame! Dogs can have dental problems just like people. Unbrushed teeth = pain, tartar and expensive vet visits.

How to brush your dog's teeth:

  • ๐Ÿพ Use a special dog toothbrush and toothpaste โ€” human toothpaste contains fluoride which is harmful to dogs!
  • ๐Ÿพ Start slowly โ€” let your dog sniff the paste, then gently massage their gums with your finger.
  • ๐Ÿพ Brush 2โ€“3 times a week, and if possible โ€” every day.
  • ๐Ÿพ As extra support, buy dental chews โ€” they help keep teeth clean.
๐Ÿ’ก

Dog toothpaste often tastes like chicken or beef. For your dog it's a treat, not a chore!

๐Ÿ‘‚

7. Cleaning ears โ€” a small task, a big difference

A dog's ears are a place where dirt, wax and moisture easily build up โ€” especially in dogs with floppy ears (like Labradors or Cocker Spaniels). Neglected ears can lead to painful infections.

How to care for your dog's ears:

  • ๐Ÿพ Check the ears once a week โ€” look for bad smell, redness or dark brown dirt.
  • ๐Ÿพ Use a special dog ear-cleaning solution and a cotton pad โ€” never a cotton bud!
  • ๐Ÿพ Only wipe what you can see from the outside โ€” don't reach in deep.
  • ๐Ÿพ If your dog shakes their head, scratches their ear or it smells strongly โ€” time to see the vet!
๐Ÿ’ก

After a bath, always gently dry the inside of the ears โ€” moisture is the perfect environment for bacteria.

๐ŸŽ“

8. Learning commands โ€” speak, and your dog will listen!

Learning commands isn't training โ€” it's communication! When your dog understands what you expect, they feel calmer, safer and more confident. And you'll feel so proud when your dog sits on command ๐Ÿ˜Š

Basic commands:

"Sit"
The absolute basics. Practise with a treat in hand.
"Down"
When you want your dog to calm down.
"Stay"
Teaches patience and self-control.
"Come"
The most important command for your dog's safety!
"Leave it"
Can save your dog's life around dangerous objects.

How to practise commands:

  • ๐Ÿพ Keep sessions short โ€” 5โ€“10 minutes a few times a day is ideal.
  • ๐Ÿพ Always reward with a treat and praise when your dog does it correctly.
  • ๐Ÿพ Be consistent โ€” always use the same word for the same command.
  • ๐Ÿพ Never shout or punish your dog for a mistake โ€” they're learning, just like you!
๐Ÿ’ก

Start with "sit" โ€” it's the easiest command. Early wins give your dog (and you!) motivation to keep going.

๐Ÿฅ

9. Vet visits โ€” a healthy dog is a happy dog

The vet is your dog's doctor. Even if your dog looks healthy, regular check-ups are important โ€” just like you go to the doctor for a check-up.

  • ๐Ÿพ Remind your parents about yearly vaccinations and worming treatments.
  • ๐Ÿพ Observe your dog every day โ€” are they eating normally? Do they have energy? Are they limping?
  • ๐Ÿพ If something worries you about your dog's behaviour โ€” always tell an adult.
๐Ÿ’ก

Keep a health notebook for your dog โ€” write down visits, vaccinations and any observations. It helps the vet enormously!

๐Ÿพ Remember โ€” you are your dog's whole world!

They don't understand explanations about being busy or tired. But they perfectly understand your presence, your voice and your touch. Every bowl of food, every walk, every moment of play โ€” to them it's proof of love. Care for them with your heart, and they'll reward you with a loyalty you won't find anywhere else in the world. ๐Ÿ•โค๏ธ
